I'm not sure it's something she can explain.

[ But yeah she won't talk to him about it, really. ]

Unfortunately, he's always had a knack for causing problems in relationships.

He's not a problem.

[ God help Harvey if Matt ever finds out what he did. He's lost too many lovers to take it anything less than deadly serious, and not even his precarious status here would stop Matt from putting Harvey in the hospital. Permanently, if necessary. ]

I won't let him become a problem.

[gevurah]

Neither will I.

[ In many ways, she wants to be the one to get her hands on Harvey first. ]

I'm not going to let him try to sabotage everyone else's happiness because he has jealousy issues.

[ They'll have to compromise and go for him together. ]

Has he upheld the noninterference agreement with you?

[ I.E. not tried to get between her and Matt himself. ]

[ Dibs on the first punch. ]

He has. Probably because Renee's been gone some time now.

If I asked for details on what really happened between them, would you feel comfortable answering?

[ He's never sure if he has the whole picture there. Or why Renee wasn't more forthcoming with her warnings. But everybody seems so damn cagey about Harvey Dent. ]

[gevurah]

Not entirely, but for other reasons.

[ She will never fully understand why Renee has tried to stay in the closet here. ]

I will tell you, though.

I would appreciate that.

[ It's not as though Matt would care if she came out. ]

Before I have to confront him again.

[gevurah]

[ After a slightly uncomfortable moment of silence: ]

They met during an earthquake that devastated Gotham. Renee was kind to him and he latched onto it and became obsessed... then he kidnapped her and her family.

[ Romantically obsessed. But Harvey would have a hard time kidnapping Matt. He can't even sneak up on Matt. ]

To what end?

[gevurah]

I'm a bit iffy on details; he kidnapped Commissioner Gordon of Gotham PD as well and forced him to stand trial for "crimes" he committed during No Man's Land. [ A brief pause. ] That was what they called it then; when the earthquake hit and left the city a wreck, the government abandoned it.

[notdaredevil]

Makes sense. [ Probably a fitting name for the mood, and the way it must have been to live there. Though thinking about a city, abandoned by the government responsible for it, makes him sick to his stomach to contemplate. ] And it was the perfect opportunity for him, with limited resources and the chaos to hide in. Right?

[gevurah]

Exactly.

He was locked up eventually and the Commissioner, Renee and her family were released.

But Dent never stopped obsessing over her. He destroyed Renee's life.

Because why? She was nice to him? I don't exactly think he and I were on very great terms before I disappeared, Kate. And he can't imagine he can come after me like that and I won't hit back ten times harder. He has to know that.

[Because he knows who Matt is.]

[gevurah]

You don't remember what happened before. [ It's just a fact; she's not blaming him for anything. ] It's a "clean" slate for Dent.

At least, that's what he thinks.

[ Why else would he cling to Matt? ]

He's not making a very good use of it.

[ Matt's disturbed, to say the least. ]

[gevurah]

He never does and never will. He's not sane.

But he's making an effort to be.

He's not capable of changing, Matt.

[ She seems so sure of and unapologetically unsympathetic about it. ]

well that's a thing I'll have to fix at some point

He believes he is, Kate.

[ And Matt can hear it, when Harvey talks about it. He really does believe it. Or he wants to believe it badly enough that he's fooling even himself. ]
